Theseus Source: Edith Hamilton's "Mythology"
- Theseus was the hero of Athens.
- He lives by the idea of doing unto others as they do unto you.
- The King wanted to poison Theseus because he was very popular in the city, and he could possibly become king. He did not know, however, that Theseus was his son.
- Theseus offered to be a victim of the Minotaur in the labyrinth.
- He was actually planning to kill the Minotaur.
- Ariadne told Theseus that she would help him to escape the labyrinth if he would marry her. He agreed, but then he left her after she helped him get away.
- Theseus became king, but he wanted a people's government. He was the creator of democracy.
- He was also involved in the search for the Golden Fleece.
- Theseus later married Phaedra, who later committed suicide. He thought that his son, Hippolytus, had killed her, so he made him leave Athens.
- Theseus was eventually forced to leave Athens, and his death was a result of people in Athens, some friends, who dethroned him.
